Benefits of Sarvangasana (Shoulder Stand Pose)

Sarvangasana means in Sanskrit ‘stance of all parties’ and it is considered one of the essential postures in yoga. Swami Sivananda claimed that with only three positions, it is possible to maintain a perfectly healthy body and one of them is Sarvangasana. The other two include Sirsasana and Paschimottanasana.

So it is a posture that works the whole system, and therefore it is one of the asanas with greater physical, mental and spiritual benefits. For example, it calms the mind so it is great to deal with stress; it gives us focus and energy, counteracts lethargy and depression and helps us sleep better. It makes more flexible and healthy spine and promotes circulation and blood supply to the head and upper body, being an inverted posture.

It is the best exercise for stimulating and regulating the thyroid gland that is responsible, among other things, for metabolism, heat production, growth and development of the body, and it is related to the heart rate and blood pressure and has a leading role in the growth of muscles and bones.

The pressure of the chin on the chest also promotes the proper functioning of the parathyroid gland that helps maintain adequate levels of calcium in the body. Sarvangasana is also related to our fifth chakra. To balance, we can supplement with fish posture.

Sarvangasana is also used as part of treatment to restore health or favor some aspects in the body. For example, it is one of the positions that are recommended to treat allergies, to increase fertility levels, to treat overweight, depression and detoxify the body and mind. It is also recommended to balance doshas in Ayurveda during spring, summer and winter.

It throughout the system works. It improve the flexibility of spine, clear the airway, stimulate the thyroid and parathyroid gland, stimulates circulation, rejuvenates and revitalizes. It gives a deep stretch to the upper back, promotes flexibility of the shoulders, and is used to treat insomnia, counteracts the tendency to develop varicose vein, promotes circulation in the legs, massage the heart and is said to make the body slimmer and improves the appearance of the skin.

The regulation of the thyroid, the central gland of the endocrine system has major implications on health. Some of the processes that are related to thyroid include regulating metabolism, heat production, control of the development of the body, promotion of protein synthesis and growth of muscle and bone.

Parathyroid gland is also regulated in this position, ensuring adequate levels of calcium in tissues and blood and strong bones. A well-balanced parathyroid gland prevents muscle weakness, kidney diseases that occur in cases of having an overactive gland function and muscle stiffness and spasms associated with a deficiency.

It helps treat insomnia, counteracts lethargy and depression, reduce stress and anxiety. It promotes concentration and improves mood and motivation in general. In terms of our subtle bodies, it is a yoga posture that works for the fifth chakra, the communication center. This energy center through which we learn to have a place in the world and express our individuality. At the same time, this chakra allows us to keep in touch with our inner voice that guides us on our way in life. It refreshes and rejuvenates.
