The Importance of Interproximal Cleaning

The Importance of Interproximal Cleaning

The interproximal or interdental area is the space between teeth and it is occupied by the gum. Conditions that offer interproximal spaces facilitate the appearance and accumulation of oral plaque and areas that are difficult to access even if the teeth are in normal position.
Problems Associated with Interproximal
The interproximal area facilitates the establishment and development of the oral biofilm, which favors the development of caries, gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. To avoid these associated problems, or even the appearance of halitosis, it is very important to ensure the elimination of biofilm deposited in the interproximal spaces. An oral hygiene is not complete without oral biofilm removal of interproximal spaces.

Interproximal Cleaning

The most common method of controlling the oral biofilm is tooth brushing, but in addition to full access to the interproximal surfaces, it requires the use of silk or dental tape and/or interproximal brushes for cleaning specific oral biofilm accumulated between teeth. In addition, you can also use supplementary appliances such as oral irrigators using pulsatile irrigation system which is proven.
Dental silks and ribbons are given for the removal of oral biofilm accumulated in narrow interdental spaces.

Interproximal Brushes

Indicated in the interproximal cleaning of large interdental spaces (when there is sufficient space between teeth), as well as cleaning premolars and molars, or cases in which the disc has receded and a larger, more accessible area is presented. The most suitable interproximal brushes are those with high filament quality with and do not damage the gums.
Such brushes may also be used as antimicrobials applicator, for example, to apply a gel or Chlorhexidine Cetylpyridinium Chloride, caries or preventing inflammation. The brush will be replaced when their filaments and become loose or deformed.

Dental Handpiece

It is the direct application of a pulsating jet of water or other solution, which helps to eliminate bacteria deposited on the surface of teeth, gumline, interproximal spaces and hard to reach places such as bags periodontal, bridges, crowns, orthodontics, etc.
During cleaning of interproximal, gingival bleeding may be indicative of the presence of inflammation. This is not a sign that you must avoid the interproximal cleaning, but rather the opposite, that inflammation must be treated.

Importantly, the current methods of interproximal cleaning are limited in their effectiveness by the ability or commitment of each person rather than the method itself. Not all elements of interproximal cleaning are suitable for all people or all types of teeth. If in doubt, you should consult with the dentist to select the most appropriate method of hygiene and ensuring more complete oral hygiene.
