Baekeland never knew that, in fact, what he had synthesized was what we know today as the copolymer. Unlike homopolymers, which are formed by identical monomeric units (e.g. polyethylene), the copolymers are composed of at least two different monomers. Another thing that Baekeland did not know is that the high degree of cross-linking of the molecular structure of bakelite gives it the property of being a thermosetting plastic, that is to say that it can be molded as soon as its preparation is finished. In other words, once the bakelite is cooled, it cannot soften again. This differentiates it from thermoplastic polymers, which can be melted and molded several times, because the chains may be linear or branched but do not cross-link.
