Tips and Tricks for Attracting and Feeding Hummingbirds

A hummingbird is a small bird that can be many different colors, and is usually identified by its long, pointed bill that allows it to drink nectar from flowers. Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards and hover in midair by beating their wings rapidly. There are hundreds of species of hummingbirds (around 350 to be more precise) with around 16 different types in the US. Some common types are the broad-tailed, magnificent, black-chinned, lucifer, blue-throated, and the most common in the US, the ruby-throated.

Since hummingbirds consume half of their body weight in food every single day, it is important to know precisely what they eat and drink. A hummingbird will drink nectar that is high in sugar content from flowers or a bird feeder. It will not drink nectar that does not have at least 10 percent sugar content. Many people do not know that hummingbirds also eat flies and small insects for protein, minerals, and vitamins. Although there are many different types of hummingbirds, they all share common eating patterns. They use their long tongues to access the nectar deep within the flowers, and their fast wings to hover in place while they drink.

Tips to Attract and Feed the Hummingbirds

  • You will want to buy multiple feeders, but do not place them next to each other. In fact, it is best to place them out of site from each other. This is because hummingbirds are aggressive when it comes to feeding and will fight other hummingbirds to protect nectar that they have found.
  • When looking for flowers to plant that will attract hummingbirds, look for brightly colored flowers that have a trumpet-like shape. This will keep insects away because they cannot reach the nectar inside. The flowers do not need to have a scent, as hummingbirds cannot smell.
  • Artificial nectar that a hummingbird will enjoy is simple to make. Just mix 1 part sugar with 4 parts water, and fill the bird feeder. If you boil water (and then let it cool) before mixing with sugar, it will keep the nectar fresh for a couple more days.
  • Place a couple rotten banana peels in your garden near the flowers. They will attract certain insects which the hummingbird can eat for extra protein.
  • Buy a hose mister and place near the garden because all birds love water!

If you are interested in attracting hummingbirds, you will want to put up a hummingbird bird feeder on your place where you want them to be.
