How did it all begin?
In June 1766, an American woman named Betsy Ross received a visit at her home in Philadelphia by George Washington and George Ross and other members of the continental congress. The visit was to propose to the girl the design of a flag that Washington had in pencil.
This one was very similar to the one of its shield of battles. She willingly agreed to sew it and make it in her living room. However, she decided to change certain details to the stars for a better design.
From this meeting, there are no witnesses or testimony that Washington has asked the favor of her. What is certain is that they had known each other for a long time for the reason that they went to the same Christian church. Therefore, she had worked for him on certain occasions. This information was not known until 100 years later by relatives close to Ross.
Were there other designers?
Because of this meeting that Ross and Washington had, there was very little evidence. Many did not believe this legend. It is said that another woman was involved in the design of this flag named Mary Pickensgill. Which was traced by Fort McHenry during the Battle of Baltimore in 1812.
However, another character named Francis Hopkins appears who is the only claiming to have designed the American flag. He did not obtain monetary remuneration since he had received a salary as a member of the congress. However, to this day, it is not known who the original designer of this work of art was.
How has the flag evolved?
On June 14, 1777, the only resolution for the flag was approved. Since then this has had a number of changes. In 1795, the American flag changed from having 13 stars to 15 stars.
This happened by adding 2 more states to the union. The stars did not change until 1818 where they changed to 20 states. There it was decreed that by the addition of a new state to the union a star would be increased every 4th July following the admission.
Over the years, the design of American flag has changed many times leaving as a winner with the 50 stars approved in 1960. This latest edition was made by the addition of Hawaii as another American state, remaining till today with 50 stars and 13 stripes between red and white. Today, the American flag is a unique symbol in the country and every American carries the flag with pride.
