Why Do Furniture Manufacturers Shy Away From Using Polyurethane?

Despite the undeniable advantages of the paints and lacquers with polyurethane, there are many furniture and wood product manufacturers who use catalyzed lacquers in order to cut the cost. When we talk about the characteristics of polyurethane products, many manufacturers say that in the end the products finished with polyurethane are in a state similar to the one finished with acid catalyzed, increasing between 5 and 8 percent the sale price and reducing the cost of labor, energy and productivity by 3 percent, that is, a greater value added to the furniture in 10 and 15 percent of the original value.

It is understood then that the over-cost is apparent and that both the furniture manufacturer and the client obtain important advantages of the use of these products. The problem seems to be the acquisition power of finished parts with these resins.

Many furniture manufacturers also say that the polyurethane gives the furniture an almost glass shine and it allows the polish of the pieces that is not possible with different lacquers and enhances the veneer materials that are delicate and uncommon for the national market and also warn that the cost of furniture can exceed three times as compare to the a sealed and finished with catalyzed lacquers and therefore customers only account for 10% of their production.

The cost is the reason in many countries where almost nobody has been in charge of producing polyurethanes and companies still prefer to dedicate themselves to producing catalyzed, nitrocellulose or similar compounds since it is much more profitable in a country whose furniture industry has a more independent and artisan character.

Since this industry uses unusual veneers such as parchment, bone, sea clusters, sea shells, silver sheets and even scouring pads, you need a product that allows them to give resistant finishes and to do this, before using the polyurethane, apply a sealant or a polyester resin, as in this way, they obtain pieces of great beauty, duration and amazing costs.

The furniture sellers say that it is difficult to sell furniture with polyurethane and not because of resins, but because it is difficult in the country to sell high-priced furniture due to the market holdback.

There is no doubt that the advantages offered by polyurethane far outweigh those of the market that offer a similar service. In fact, the advantages in abrasion and scratch resistance allow it to be used in bowling floors without waxing or breaking through heavy traffic.

At present, polyurethane is successfully applied to other materials such as metal. Airplanes, equipment, machinery and structures are covered with this film to protect them from sudden changes in temperature, taking advantage of the fact that their catalysis process is by chemical reaction and not by contact with air.
