How to Seal Grout in Bathroom Tiles?

Sealing the grout in bathroom tiles prevents stains and keeps the moisture from penetrating the tile which cause mold and mildew. Sealing of grout is a periodic maintenance task that must be performed every few years or following the maintenance periods recommended by the manufacturer of the grout sealer. To avoid the need to seal the grout, consider using an epoxy grout product. Most do not require or advise a sealant to be applied.

  • Choose a penetrating, colorless, water-based grout sealer for the tiles in bathroom. This type of sealant is soaked in the porous grout and reduces the possibility that the grout is stained by contact with other liquids and materials used in the bathroom.
  • Freshly applied grout should be cured at least 48 hours prior to cleaning and application of the sealant. Old tile installations should be cleaned and allowed to dry for 48 hours before applying the sealant. Oxygen cleaners are an excellent way to remove dirt, oil and wax from the nozzle, which can interfere with proper application of the grout sealer.
  • Apply the sealant to the grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Use the small brush of an artist or any other recommended by the manufacturer to apply the sealant. Start in a far corner and work towards the front door, making sure you do not disturb the sealant after it is applied.
  • You should put on the gloves of rubber as well as the knee protection pads before you start the application process of sealant.
  • Use a clean cloth to remove any sealant that finds its way onto the tile. The grout sealer will dry very quickly and leave a haze or film on the tile which is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to remove in most cases. Clean up spills and excessive application quickly to prevent this tough formation.
  • You can wipe the spills or bumps with a damp cloth as you work. Repeat the process a second time if your product requires two applications. Allow the grout sealer to dry completely before scrubbing the ceramic tile floor.

You can see there are many advantages of sealing grout lines present among the tiles. The grout sealer prevents the dirt as well as stains which make the tiles look filthy. It takes little time to seal the grout but it prolongs tiles’ life in the bathroom.
