What are the Basics of Installing a Bathtub?

Installing a bathtub is not exactly quantum physics, but it does require some plumbing, carpentry and sometimes even paving. If the old bathtub is really accessible, the project can be done quickly, on the other hand, if you have to remove the old bathtub and locate a new one, the task is much more difficult. In each case, the project can be done by any man accustomed to household chores, although he will need help to move the old bathtub and put the new one.

When you do it, ensure you know enough to do the job and that you feel comfortable doing it. Instead of paying a contractor to do the project when it is in the middle, it is best to use one before you start. Surely you will need a professional plumber to make the connections. This article will help you install a new tub in your bathroom if you have already purchased the new bathtub and you do not need to change the arrangements of your main pipes. Your tools and materials should be the following;

  • Hammer
  • Pipe wrench
  • Lever
  • Security glasses
  • Leveler
  • Tongs
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Putty knife
  • Screwdriver
  • Cooler
  • Measuring tape

Preparing the Installation

Firstly, the support frame provided with the bathtub should be installed, if required, according to the manufacturer’s instructions and put the keys to the bathtub. When installing the key lock, it is important to ensure the keys come with a plastic washer, which is placed between the tub and the keys. In a plastic bathtub, it is also important to put a support plate under the keys to prevent leaks. Put the flexible wrench connectors on the end of the two wrenches using two nuts, which sometimes come with the bathtub itself.

Install the plug by smearing filling mastic around the outlet of the pipe, and then pass the plug through the hole in the bathtub. Use the nut provided by the manufacturer to install the plug hole. Examine the plug hole to look for an inlet opening next to the overflow pipe and locate the end of the flexible spill pipe connected to the spill outlet. After that, the hole in spill piping system should be in the bathtub. Be sure to use all washers that come with the bathtub. The bathtub should now be ready to be placed in its final position.

Removing the Old Keys

If you need to replace old keys with new ones as part of the installation, then the first thing you should do is to turn off water supply. After doing so, turn the keys to drain any water left in the system. The process of removing existing keys can be quite problematic due to the generally restricted access.

Use a wrench or a special tool to loosen the nut that connects to the water supply pipes with the wrenches. Have a rag ready to deal with water that will come out of the pipes. Once the supply lines have been removed, use the same tool to loosen the nuts that hold the keys connected to the bathtub. You will need to hold the keys, so that they do not rotate while you want to loosen them. Once the keys have been removed, the holes in bathtub should be cleaned of any dirt that has been accumulating.

Before placing the new keys, compare the pipe connections with the new keys. If the old keys are longer than the new ones, you will need an adapter to install them.
